Stripe not paying out?
The operator-honest 6-step triage.
When Stripe holds your payout, the dashboard says "under review" and support sends template responses. This page is what you actually do — diagnosis, escalation paths, refund handling, and the backup rail so one processor's risk model never freezes you again. Built by an operator who's been through it.
The honest 6-step diagnostic
When Stripe stops paying out, it's almost always one of six things. Identify which one before you escalate — the resolution path is different per cause:
Account verification incomplete
Stripe requires SSN/EIN/DOB/business-address verified before the first payout. Check dashboard.stripe.com/settings/account — any "verification pending" badges? Upload the remaining docs. Resolution: 1-3 business days after doc upload.
Transaction in review queue
A flagged transaction or sudden volume change triggers manual review. Check Balance page → look for "under review" label on specific transactions. Resolution: 24-72 hours typical · the held transaction releases when review completes · other transactions usually continue.
First-payout schedule holdback
New Stripe accounts have a 7-14 day rolling reserve before the first payout. This is NORMAL · not a problem. Resolution: wait the schedule out · you can see the payout date on your Balance page.
Bank account rejected
Wrong routing/account number · frozen bank · or bank doesn't accept Stripe ACH deposits. Check Balance page for "bank account issue" label. Resolution: re-verify bank details · or switch to a different bank account that accepts ACH from non-bank-originators.
Risk model freeze
Chargeback rate exceeded 1% · refund rate spiked · or your industry-risk score changed. This is the hardest category. Resolution: email risk-operations@stripe.com with subject "Risk hold inquiry · acct_[id] · specific policy citation request" · escalate to written explanation · timeline 2-12 weeks with monthly review.
Compliance / KYC re-verification
Triggered by AML/sanctions screening · ownership change · annual re-KYC cycle. Check email for Stripe KYC requests. Resolution: complete the re-verification flow · 4-8 weeks typical.
While the hold is active · what to actually do
Keep refunds flowing. Stripe processes refunds even during a payout hold (debits from balance or bank account). Continuing to issue refunds proves good-faith operation and often shortens the review window. Stopping refunds escalates risk-score concerns.
Don't open a second Stripe account. Stripe's risk system links accounts by business name + EIN + bank account + owner SSN + IP + device fingerprint. Opening a second account during a hold typically freezes both. The honest path is processor diversification — not Stripe duplication.
Document everything in writing. Email-based communication with Stripe Risk Ops creates a paper trail. Chat support gives templated responses. Always escalate to email with specific policy citation requests.
If amounts exceed $10K and the hold is permanent, file a complaint with your state banking regulator + FTC. Doesn't always work but sometimes accelerates resolution. Document the resolution timeline you've been given vs what actually happened.
The deeper fix · stop letting one processor define your cash flow
The actual operator-honest lesson when Stripe stops paying out: your business shouldn't depend on a single payment processor's risk model. One Stripe freeze can stop your operation. One Stripe risk-score recalculation can cost you a month of runway.
The right architecture in 2026 is processor diversification — ONE primary, ONE backup, optionally ONE alternative rail (stablecoin · ACH-direct · invoicing). Set up the backup BEFORE you need it — not during the crisis when KYC paperwork takes 4-8 weeks at every new processor.
Realistic backup rails ranked by speed-to-replace-Stripe:
- PayPal Commerce Platform — fastest setup · similar fees · DIFFERENT risk model (independent of Stripe's chargeback database).
- Square — strong if you have any in-person component · integrates ACH + cards · slower for pure-online.
- Adyen — enterprise-grade · slower onboarding (2-4 weeks) but lower per-transaction at scale.
- Authorize.net — bare-bones · very stable · 24-year operation · lower features but proven.
- Stablecoin invoicing (USDC + Coinbase Commerce or BitPay) — useful for B2B + international · fast settlement · regulatory clarity in 2026.
