What this audit actually checks

Three concrete checks that determine whether AI search engines can find + cite your site. Each maps to a play in Rodrigo Stockebrand's 40-play AEO playbook.

1 · robots.txt — explicit AI crawler allowlist

What we check: Does your robots.txt have explicit User-agent allow blocks for the major AI crawlers? GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, Claude-User, Claude-Web, anthropic-ai, PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended, bingbot, Meta-ExternalAgent, FacebookBot, DuckAssistBot, YouBot, Amazonbot, CCBot, cohere-ai, MistralAI-User. Why: wildcard `User-agent: *` lets crawlers in technically, but many WAF/CDN configs silently block named bots. Explicit named allow signals deliberate welcome.

2 · llms.txt — curated index per llmstxt.org spec

What we check: Does your site serve a /llms.txt file with a curated index of canonical URLs? Why: AI crawlers fetch this first to know what pages on your site are most important. Without it, they crawl blindly. With it, you tell them what to prioritize. Per Cloudflare's 2025 study, brands deploying llms.txt + explicit allowlist gained 48% more LLM-referred traffic in one quarter.

3 · llms-full.txt — deep ingestion file

What we check: Does your site serve a /llms-full.txt file with full markdown of your most-important content? Why: AI agents prefer to ingest from one consolidated file rather than crawling 50 pages. With llms-full.txt, you control what AI knows about you. Without it, AI assembles its own (often inaccurate) understanding from scattered crawl signals.

Why we built this tool free

Operator-honest disclosure: SideGuy sells AEO Install Packs ($5.5-12.5K fixed-scope). This audit is the lead-magnet for that. But the audit is genuinely useful even if you never buy from us.

We win either way. If you fix it yourself based on the audit, more sites with AEO infrastructure means more AI citations across the operator-honest content layer (which is structurally good for SideGuy as one of those operator-honest sources). If you hire SideGuy to ship the install, even better — we have a paying client. Either outcome is honest, neither is locked-in.

The audit ships free because the playbook (Rodrigo Stockebrand's 40-play AEO doctrine) is the actual moat — not the audit. SideGuy's edge is shipping installations, not reading playbooks. So we share the audit; the installation stays the product.

Common questions

Q: What is AEO and why does it matter?

AEO = Answer Engine Optimization. How your content gets cited by AI search engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini). Different from SEO — AEO targets agent citation. By 2026 ~30% of B2B research starts in AI search engines.

Q: What does my score mean?

0-3: silent to AI search engines (most sites). 4-6: partial allowlist, missing key files. 7-9: good infrastructure. 10: complete coverage. SideGuy's full AEO Install Pack lifts most sites from 3 → 9-10 in 2 weeks.

Q: Why might the audit fail to fetch my site?

CORS (Cross-Origin Resource Sharing) restrictions. Some servers don't return permissive CORS headers on robots.txt / llms.txt. If we get blocked, we tell you what to look for manually instead. The CORS issue itself is unrelated to AEO — it doesn't affect AI crawlers (they don't run in browsers).

Q: Do AI crawlers actually look for llms.txt?

It's an emerging standard (per llmstxt.org). Adoption is growing. ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity have all signaled support. Even if a specific AI crawler doesn't fetch llms.txt directly today, having it future-proofs you AND signals deliberate AEO posture (which AI Overview ranking systems do appear to value).
