Payment link expired?
The 5-cause operator-honest triage.
Payment links expire across Stripe · Square · PayPal · Adyen for 5 specific reasons · time-based · single-use consumed · manual deactivation · processor account restriction · currency/country mismatch. This page diagnoses which · plus the architectural fix so chronic expiration stops eating your revenue. Built for operators losing customers to silent payment-link friction.
The 5-cause diagnostic ladder
Walk these 5 in order · most expired payment links resolve at step 1-2:
Time-based expiration
Most payment links default 24-72 hour expiration. Stripe Payment Links · 1h to 1y configurable · default 24h. Square Online Checkout · default never (multi-use) · 7 days (single-use). PayPal Payment Links · default 10 days · max 30. Adyen Pay by Link · default 7 days. Fix: Configure longer expiration explicitly OR generate new link.
Single-use already consumed
Stripe + Square default single-use links · once paid, link expires immediately. Customer trying to pay AGAIN with same link gets "expired" error. Fix: Create new payment link OR switch to multi-use mode if recurring need.
Manual deactivation
Account owner deactivated link via dashboard. Common when operator updates pricing OR deletes-by-mistake. Fix: Check dashboard · "Reactivate" if available OR create new from template.
Payment processor account issue
Stripe/PayPal account restricted · suspended · or under review affects ALL payment links from that account. Fix: Resolve underlying account restriction first (see Stripe Payout Triage for restriction triage) · payment links will reactivate once account restored.
Currency or country mismatch
Link configured for specific currency/country · customer browser locale or payment method incompatible · link rejects without explicit error. Fix: Check link configuration · regenerate with multi-currency support if international customers.
The architectural fix · stop relying on single-processor payment links
If your business hits payment-link expiration regularly · the architecture is wrong · not the link.
1. Move to recurring billing / subscription model. Stripe Subscriptions or Recurly auto-regenerate payment cycles · removes expiration concern entirely. Right for B2B SaaS · membership · ongoing service.
2. Build backup payment rail. PayPal Commerce + Square + stablecoin invoicing (USDC via Coinbase Commerce or BitPay) in parallel · customer picks · expiration on any single rail doesn't block payment. Per backup payment rail doctrine · processor diversification is the operator-honest fix.
3. Use payment-link orchestration platform. Adyen + Stripe + PayPal abstracted behind your own checkout layer · operator controls expiration policy independent of processor defaults. More complex but right for high-volume operations.
