⚠️ A SideGuy Field Guide · Operator Survival

"Can you
just...?"

The four most dangerous words in tech, customer support, and any room with both an operator and a person who has never opened a terminal. The "just" is doing a lot of work. Usually about 6 weeks of work and a 12,000-page sweep.

A field guide. With receipts.
⚡ TL;DR · 30-second read "Can you just" is the universal warning shot of an underestimated request. The asker thinks they're being polite by adding "just" — implying the work is small. The recipient hears: "I have not thought about this for more than 4 seconds." What follows is usually a multi-week sweep, a discovered bug class, a pricing conversation, or all three. Today's specific receipt: "can you just fix the canonicals?" → 12,399 broken pages, 7 source generators patched, 2 hours of cleanup. And that was the fast version.

The Hall of Fame · requests we have heard

Every line below is a real request a real person made with a straight face. The "reality" line is what it actually took (or would have taken).

Can you just add a button?
Reality: Design (2 days). Copy review (1 day). A/B variant (3 days). Mobile breakpoint (1 day). Accessibility (1 day). Analytics wiring (1 day). Edge case for users in 7 weird states (3 days). Legal review (1 day). = 13 days for a button.
Classic
Can you just fix the typo?
Reality: The typo is in 12,399 places. It came from a generator. The generator is in production. The generator is also generating future typos. = 2 hours minimum, plus a guard so it can't regenerate.
Today's example
Can you just make it like Stripe?
Reality: Stripe spent 14 years and roughly $2 billion on "it." They have a 9,000-person company. = sure, give me 14 years and a B.
CEO classic
Can you just SEO it?
Reality: "It" is a vague pile of pages, half indexed, some canonical-pointing to a directory that doesn't exist, with three competing meta descriptions and no internal link mesh. = 4-week recovery from a 5-minute mistake somebody made in March.
Marketing classic
Can you just use AI?
Reality: AI will absolutely "just" do it. AI will also confidently "just" do it wrong at industrial scale and ship to production at 3am. (See: today's 12,399 broken canonicals — written by a previous AI session trying to "just" optimize crawl budget.) = human in the loop or a four-week cleanup.
2026 classic
Can you just send me the data?
Reality: The data lives in 4 systems. Two are deprecated. One has a SOC 2 export gate. One is a CSV your finance person emails on Mondays. = a 2-hour ETL job for "send me the data."
Ops classic
Can you just integrate with our CRM?
Reality: Your CRM has 73 custom fields nobody documented. The API was last updated in 2019. The webhook fires intermittently. There is a person named Brian who knows why. Brian left in 2022. = "we'll find out together."
Integration classic
Can you just make it faster?
Reality: The slowness is a 7-year accumulation of SELECT * queries on a table with 40 million rows and zero indexes that would actually help. = weeks of profiling, not "just."
Perf classic

Today's "can you just" moment.

This morning a friend asked: "you fixed those canonicals already, right? Can you just verify it?"

"Can you just verify it."

The verification surfaced 12,399 broken canonicals across 452,076 files. The April fix had only got 150. A previous AI session had pointed every page's canonical at an authority directory that was never created. Each page told Google "consolidate ranking here" → 404 → quiet de-rank → 4 weeks of impression rot.

Two hours later: self-canonical sweep, 7 source generators patched, 12,378 files shipped, CDN wildcard invalidated, 0 broken remaining, recovery clock started.

The "just verify" moved 12,399 files. That's the "just."

The new "can you just" — powered by AI.

Used to be: a person says "can you just" and a person quietly absorbs the cost.

Now: a person says "can you just" and an AI agent hears it as a green light. The AI can just. The AI will just. The AI will just at industrial scale, in parallel, with confidence, and will ship to production while you make coffee.

Sometimes it ships beautifully. Sometimes it ships 12,399 broken canonicals into your live site and you find out four weeks later when your impressions chart looks like it fell off a cliff.

Both outcomes look the same to the AI. That's why human-in-the-loop isn't optional anymore — it's the moat.

AI is the fast typist.
The judgment is yours.

The honest answer: sometimes you can just.

SideGuy exists for the few "can you just" requests where the answer is actually yes. Most of the Hall of Fame above are landmines. A few are genuinely small. The trick is knowing which.
