Today's plain answer · updated 3:32AM PT
- Charge the EV and run the dryer/dishwasher midnight-6am and 10am-2pm. That's SDG&E super off-peak: 13.1¢/kWh on EV-TOU-5 (summer rate).
- Avoid 4-9pm. On-peak is 80.2¢ on EV-TOU-5 and 69.1¢ (58.4¢ for the first 130% of baseline) on TOU-DR1 - about 6x the cheap hours on EV-TOU-5.
- Pre-cool before 4pm. Heat today: cool the house down early, close blinds, and let the thermostat drift up during 4-9pm.
- Solar owners: noon exports earn about 5.5¢ today; the best evening hour (6pm) earns 19.2¢ - 3.5x more. Use solar yourself at noon; a battery's job is to cover 4-9pm.

San Diego's grid this week
California grid notices (CAISO): Restricted Maintenance Operations: Tue Oct 6 to Thu Oct 8, 10am to 10pm each day. That means high demand is expected, so utilities and grid operators are told not to take generators or lines offline for routine maintenance. No Flex Alert or energy emergency has been called. CAISO Today's Outlook
Yesterday (Mon Oct 5) San Diego's grid peaked at 5,044 MW around 5-6pm, the most since Wed Sep 9 (5,354 MW). This summer's high (since Fri May 1) was Tue Sep 8 at 5,395 MW. The highest forecast this week is Tue Oct 6, 4,931 MW.

| Mon Oct 12 | 73°F coast · 77°F inland | 3,014 MW around 6-7pm | 56% | 7-day forecast |
How CAISO's forecasts did lately. Sat Oct 3: actual 5,014 MW; 2-day forecast 4,486 (11% low), 7-day forecast 3,379 (33% low). Sun Oct 4: actual 4,965 MW; 2-day forecast 4,616 (7% low), 7-day forecast 3,750 (24% low). Mon Oct 5: actual 5,044 MW; 2-day forecast 5,136 (2% high), 7-day forecast 4,253 (16% low). They've been running low in this heat, so this week's real peaks may come in higher than the table.
Demand is the California grid operator's (CAISO) load for SDG&E's area, in megawatts, hour of the daily peak. High demand by itself doesn't switch the lights off: if the state grid runs short, a Flex Alert comes first. Actuals since Fri May 1; forecasts refresh every morning.

Ways to get paid
- Grid-emergency events (SDG&E ELRP): $2/kWh for verified load reduction during CAISO-triggered events, 4-9pm, May through October. Homes with batteries join through an aggregator or their battery company, not directly. Details and sources.
- Sell solar back: bill credits at the hourly export price above; the evening pays most. What you actually get.
- Batteries and EVs as grid capacity (SB 913): the CPUC must open a path by June 30, 2028. Nothing pays households yet; worth knowing before you buy a battery. Battery math.
- Dead system? An orphaned 6 kW solar system can cost an estimated $330-416 a month. The Orphan Solar Check.

How the board works: SideGuy is the board, not a seller of electricity. Listings are EV and e-bike charging at a flat fee, which California allows (Public Utilities Code 216(i)); selling home electricity to neighbors generally isn't allowed (218). PJ verifies every listing before it goes up.

Questions
When is electricity cheapest in San Diego today?
On SDG&E time-of-use plans, super off-peak is midnight-6am and 10am-2pm today (weekday schedule). On-peak is 4pm to 9pm every day. Rates shown are SDG&E's non-CCA totals effective Aug 1, 2026.
Why does 4 to 9pm cost so much?
That's when solar fades and demand peaks, so SDG&E prices on-peak hours highest. It's also when SDG&E pays the most for exported solar, which is why batteries are built to cover those hours.
Is this page official?
No. It's an independent local page rebuilt each morning from public data: SDG&E's published rates and export prices, CAISO market prices and NWS alerts. Check your own bill and sdge.com for your plan.
