Where to eat
North County's most-loved coffee house. Old yellow train-station building, sprawling back deck under jacaranda trees, regulars who've been coming since the 90s. The place visitors fall in love with the area at.
Two-floor situation: serious farm-to-table dinner upstairs, killer cocktail bar (Moonlight Lounge) downstairs. Encinitas's "we're celebrating" + "we're starting somewhere" simultaneous. The downstairs lounge is what makes it.
Right across PCH from the Cardiff sand. Mexican classics, strong margaritas, ocean view. The post-surf burrito spot AND the sunset margarita spot. Cash-flow-positive since the '90s for a reason.
Inside Cardiff State Beach campground. Fish tacos with truffle aioli (don't dismiss it), rice bowls, decent margaritas. Walk across the sand to your spot.
Walk-up taco shack, organic ingredients, surfboards on the wall. The Leucadia quick-bite that isn't pretending to be anything else.
Organic vegan café for the Encinitas yoga set. Bowls, smoothies, ceremonial-grade matcha if that's your thing. Better than it sounds — the owners actually cook.
Drive-thru-ish coffee shack on 101. The Encinitas commuter staple. Better than you'd expect from the building. Gets you back on the road in 90 seconds.
Rooftop is the move — fish-and-shrimp menu downstairs is fine, but you're up top for the sunset cocktails. The "I want to be in Encinitas at golden hour" answer.
Where to drink
40+ taps, full kitchen, sports on screens but not a sports bar. The Encinitas "let's actually grab a beer and have an opinion" room. Burger holds up.
The town dive. Cheap pours, jukebox, regulars, no surprises. Open late. The "we're staying out one more drink" answer.
Local brewery taproom. Outdoor seating, food trucks rotate. Family-friendly during day, beer-focused at night.
Tighter cocktail program than most of 101. Fresh juices, classic builds done right. The "I want to actually taste the drink" pick.

Where to see something
The 1928 movie palace at the heart of Encinitas. Indie + classic + cult films. Surf-doc premieres. The marquee defines the town.
Modern library on the bluff. Author talks, civic events, film screenings — free. The cliff-front patio is one of the great unknown SD spots.
Technically Solana Beach but Encinitas's de-facto music venue. 600-cap dive, plus The Sound (1000-cap). Where Encinitas goes for a real show.
Where to surf
The most famous Encinitas break and one of the most famous in California. World-class right-point reef. The lineup is real and the locals are very local. Earn it before you paddle for set waves.
Soft-bottom reef break, friendly crowd, works small to overhead. Best break for surfers visiting from out of town.
Sand-bottom beachbreak. Mellow longboard wave, friendly. The Leucadia answer when Cardiff is crowded.
Faster than Cardiff, quieter than Swami's. Long staircase down (the actual stone steps). Get used to your knees on the walk back.
Sandy-bottom right at the foot of D Street stairs. Easy entry, beginner-friendly. Lots of local kids learn here.
Where to watch the sun fall
The iconic Encinitas beach. Big sandy stretch, volleyball nets, fire rings, food shack. The town's living room. Sunsets here are a community event from June through August.
The gold-dome temple complex on the cliff above Swami's. Public meditation gardens, free. The spiritual side of "Encinitas vibe." Don't talk loudly.
RV campground meets surf-town beach. Long sandy stretch, good for walks, sunset bonfires. The Cardiff "where life happens" spot.
Clifftop campground at the south end of Cardiff. Famous for ocean-edge campsites. Day-use lot opens for non-campers. The cleanest sunset bench-seat in North County.
Quieter Leucadia beach. Steep dirt path down (no staircase). Less tourist traffic than Moonlight or Swami's.
Where to shop
The OG SD surf shop. Boards, wetsuits, advice from staff who tell you the truth about which board you actually need. Every Encinitas surfer's been here.
Custom-shape shop run by serious shapers. Surfboards built one at a time. Walk in, talk to a shaper, walk out 6 weeks later with a perfect board. The committed-surfer's shop.
The 101 corridor through Old Encinitas — vintage shops, boutiques, restaurants, La Paloma marquee, antiques. Walkable for an afternoon.

🚆 Encinitas Coaster Station
Encinitas Coaster station at 25 E D St connects you to all of SD. Smart move for Belly Up shows in Solana Beach (1 stop south, $2.50). Pacific Surfliner Amtrak also stops here.

Free street parking is real but tight. Side streets like 2nd, 3rd, Vulcan are your friend. Avoid loading zones near La Paloma — the city tickets aggressively. Moonlight Beach lot fills by 10am summer Saturdays.
🚗 Uber/Lyft at sunset
Surge is real on summer Sat-Sun 6-8pm. Walk a few blocks inland from the beach lots before requesting; cuts surge ~30%.

Old Encinitas (D St → Moonlight) is the most walkable. Cardiff is car-only between spots. Leucadia 101 strip is walkable but spread out — half-mile between major points.
🏄 Surf check loop
Drive south to north: Cardiff Reef → Swami's → D Street → Stone Steps → Beacon's. 25-min drive checks all 5 from Coast Hwy 101 turnouts.

Verizon + AT&T solid. T-Mobile spotty in dropdown gulches (Stone Steps stairwell, Self-Realization Gardens). Screenshot tickets before walking down to Swami's.
