Medigap birthday window

60 days, every year, starting on your birthday

With a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan, California lets you switch to an equal or lesser plan during the 60 days that start with your birthday. Your insurance company has to tell you about it 30 to 60 days before your birthday (California Department of Insurance).

The birthday rule

Food

CalFresh

Monthly grocery money on an EBT card

The rules at 60 and older are kinder: only the net income test, your home doesn't count, and medical costs over $35 a month come off your income. The Medicare premium counts too, so keep the receipts.

Example
One person, 72, with $2,000 a month in Social Security and $1,200 rent: about $140 a month. Counting the medical costs is worth $75 of that.
Next step
Apply on BenefitsCal or call the County at 1-866-262-9881. Benefits count from the day you apply, and the interview is usually by phone.
