Aid and Attendance adds to a VA pension. Through November 30, 2026, the most it pays is $29,093 a year for a veteran with no dependents and $18,697 for a surviving spouse; the VA counts your income against those maximums. The net worth limit is $163,699. New rates start December 1.

Who qualifies

First, the veteran (or surviving spouse) must qualify for the VA pension: wartime service, plus age or disability, plus income and net worth within the limits. Then at least one of these must be true:

  • Needs another person to help with daily activities like bathing, feeding and dressing.
  • Has to stay in bed, or spend a large part of the day in bed, because of illness.
  • Is in a nursing home because of lost mental or physical abilities related to a disability.
  • Has severely limited eyesight.

How to apply

Apply with the pension application, plus VA Form 21-2680, which a medical examiner fills out. Mail it to the Pension Intake Center (PO Box 5365, Janesville, WI 53547-5365), apply online, or bring it to a VA regional office.
