ArtCraft is an open-source studio for AI images and video. Its makers call it "an intentional crafting engine for artists, designers, and filmmakers." The code is on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license (version 0.41.0, September 26, 2026), there's a free desktop app, and a web app that runs the big video models (Seedance, Veo, Kling, Wan and more) on credits. We've used it daily since October 10 to bring PJ's own photos to life on this site. Here's what we learned.
ArtCraft pricing, from the inside
- Free: ArtCraft says it "can be used without paying for a subscription. You can bring your own compute and third-party subscriptions."
- Plans and credits: monthly or yearly plans, plus one-time credit packs that "never expire," and credits come back "if a generation fails." PJ's Basic plan was $8 a month for 1,000 credits when he signed up on October 10; on October 14 the pricing page showed a 20% off offer on every plan.
- What a clip costs: credits per clip vary by model, below. On a 1,000-credit month, that's about seven Seedance clips or twelve with Kling.
| Model | Clip | Credits | What we saw |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seedance 2.5 | 720p, 5 seconds | 134 | kept PJ's street and beach photos honest; all six living photos on this site |
| Seedance 2.5 Ultra | 720p, 5 seconds | 158 | not tested yet |
| Veo 3.1 | 1080p, 8 seconds | 192 | not tested yet |
| Kling 2.6 Pro | 16:9, 5 seconds | 81 | rejected: on a street photo the parked cars drove off and new cars appeared |
| Wan 3.0 | 720p / 1080p, 5 seconds | 49 / 97 | the open-source model family, hosted; not tested yet |

Seedance vs Kling in ArtCraft: our real-photo test
We give every model the same job: bring a real photo to life without inventing anything. Same photo (the Encinitas sign), a motion-only prompt ("palm fronds swaying, the flag waving, camera completely still, no new people, cars, clouds or objects"), then a frame-by-frame check.
- Seedance 2.5 passed. Trees and the flag moved; the street, signs and cars stayed put. Six of these are live on this site.
- Kling 2.6 Pro failed. It treated the street as live traffic: the stopped cars drove forward, three cars appeared that aren't in the photo, and the camera crept in. Fine for a made-up scene, wrong for a real place.
- The lesson: for anything with cars or people, keep the camera still, describe only motion, and check every frame before you publish.
The Craft apps (the "Adobe clones")
Separate from the studio, ArtCraft lists a growing set of open-source Craft apps: PhotoCraft, VectorCraft, FilmCraft, LightCraft, PdfCraft, EffectCraft, DesignCraft, FigCraft, WordCraft, SoundCraft, DeckCraft, CADCraft and GridCraft, installed with the Craft App Launcher (Apache 2.0). PhotoCraft, a photo editor written in Rust, had about 60,000 GitHub stars on October 14. Most are early; test one on a copy of your work first.
Four more clips on real photos (October 18)
Settings: Seedance 2.5 Ultra, 720p, 5 seconds, Keyframe mode, one of PJ's photos as the first frame. Each clip cost 158 credits and took about 12 to 14 minutes to render. Two shipped, two didn't:
- Shipped: the Cedros Avenue arch in Solana Beach. The palms behind it are fully in the frame, so the model had nothing to make up; they sway, the sky keeps its color.
- Shipped: Highway 101 at dawn. Palms and flags move; a parked bus and car were told to stay put, and did.
- Not shipped: the Belly Up front. In the photo a palm trunk runs off the top edge. The clip grew a palm crown there and swayed it: an invented object, so the still stays.
- Not shipped: our own mistake. Loading a second photo into the first-frame slot didn't replace the first one, so a clip ran on the wrong photo. Now we check the loaded image before spending credits.
What we do every time: pick scenes whose moving parts are fully in frame, crop the photo to the clip's shape first, look at frames from start to end for anything new, and put the original pixels back over every sign so no letter or number changes.

Questions people ask
How much does ArtCraft cost?
ArtCraft says it can be used without a subscription by bringing your own compute. Its plans and credit packs pay for the hosted models; PJ's Basic plan was $8 a month for 1,000 credits in October 2026. A 5-second clip cost 49 to 192 credits depending on the model.
Is ArtCraft open source?
Yes. ArtCraft's code is on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license, and the Craft apps and launcher are open source too.
Is Seedance or Kling better in ArtCraft?
For bringing a real photo to life, Seedance 2.5 kept our street scene honest; Kling 2.6 Pro moved parked cars and added new ones. Kling was cheaper per clip (81 credits vs 134).
How long does an ArtCraft video take to render?
Our Seedance 2.5 Ultra clips (720p, 5 seconds) took about 12 to 14 minutes each on October 18, at 158 credits a clip.
Does ArtCraft change things in a photo?
Sometimes. In our October 18 test it invented a palm crown where a tree ran off the top of the photo. Scenes whose moving parts are fully in the frame came out honest; we check frames and lock signs before using a clip.
Is ArtCraft a free Adobe alternative?
Its Craft apps (PhotoCraft, FilmCraft and more) are free, open-source tools for photo, video and design work, and many are early versions. Try them on a copy of your files first.
