Your checklist for today
- Shade and extra water. Umbrella or canopy, a gallon-plus per family, and go early or late; midday sand gets hot enough to burn feet.
- Ice for the cooler. It melts fast today: pre-chill, keep the cooler shaded, or have it brought (ice delivery).
- Sunscreen, reapplied about every 2 hours and after swimming; UV 8 today, and sand and water reflect it. Hat and sunglasses.
- The stingray shuffle. Warm water brings round stingrays into the sandy shallows; slide your feet as you wade in.
- Swim near a lifeguard tower. Rip current risk is up; if one pulls you out, swim parallel to shore, then in.
- Sit away from the bluffs. The sandstone cliffs along this coast can collapse without warning; keep your towel out of their shadow.
- A layer for after sunset. The air cools fast once the sun drops.
Built from the National Weather Service, EPA, NOAA buoys and tides. The checklist changes with the day: heat, UV, water temperature, rip risk and tide.
