Before you go
- Free: the County says residents and businesses can get free sand and bags to protect homes and other property from flooding and soil erosion.
- Bring a shovel. You fill the bags yourself. Some sites have sand and bags, some only bags.
- Call first to make sure the site still has sand or bags, especially the day a storm hits.
- Which site is yours: in the County's words, County and CAL FIRE sites are for the unincorporated area and cities have their own sandbags. A mailing address can say Escondido or Vista and still be unincorporated, so if you live inside a city limit, call your city's public works line to confirm its site.
- Filling and stacking: fill each bag about half full so it lies flat, fold the top under, and lay them like bricks with the seams staggered, pressing each one down. Point the low wall so water goes around the house, not into it.
- Coast too: the biggest tides of winter can push water over low spots by the beach: king tide dates · North County alerts · The Board (roads).
