Doing business under a name that isn't your own? In San Diego County you file a Fictitious Business Name (FBN) Statement, the DBA, with the County Clerk within 40 days of first doing business. It's $54 for one business name and one owner, plus $5 for each extra owner (a married couple filing together pays no extra) and $5 for each extra business name at the same location. It has to be signed in ink, so you file in person or by mail, not online. North County's office is in San Marcos, 141 E. Carmel St., weekdays 8am to 5pm, no appointment. Then a newspaper runs your notice for four weeks, and you renew every 5 years.

How to file a DBA in San Diego County
- Search the name first. The County's FBN Records Search (online or in person) shows whether it's taken (County Clerk).
- Fill in the FBN Statement (the County's form, PDF). After it's filed, "no changes can be made to the filing" (County Clerk), and a correction means a new filing and a new fee, so check every line.
- File it in person or by mail. "An FBN Statement can only be filed in person or by mail because an original, wet-ink signature is required." (County Clerk) Bring a government-issued photo ID in person. Pay by cash, check, money order or card (cards add $2.50).
- Publish the notice. Within 45 days of filing, in a newspaper of general circulation, once a week for four weeks in a row. The County gives you a list (publication rules and newspaper list, PDF).
- Put the renewal on your calendar: 5 years from filing.

Renewing a DBA
"a fictitious business name expires in 5 years." (County Clerk) Renewing is the same filing as a new one. "If there are no changes to the original filing and it is renewed within 40 days of the expiration date, there is no need to publish." (County Clerk) A new address or a change in owners ends the old statement, and the new one has to be published.
