The short answer: the 2027 San Diego County Fair is planned for June 9 to July 5, 2027: 21 days, closed Mondays and Tuesdays in June, with a chocolate theme concept. The fair board approved those dates 7-0 on April 14, 2026. Nothing on the board's record closes the Fair: the stadium plan it heard on October 13 was listed as an information item, and no vote was taken.

Is the Del Mar Fair closing?

No vote says so. Here's what the board has on its record:

  • Who decides: the 22nd District Agricultural Association owns and runs the Del Mar Fairgrounds "as an institution of the State of California," governed by a nine-member board appointed by the governor (22nd DAA). The Fair is its biggest event: nearly $52 million in total revenue in 2025, per the April board packet.
  • The stadium proposal (October 13, 2026): Del Mar Dreams LLC presented a master-plan proposal built around a 12,000 to 16,000-seat home for San Diego Wave FC, with shops and restaurants, a hotel and a convention center, built in phases, stadium first. Its partners are the Levine Leichtman family office (majority owner of the Wave since 2024) and Eighty Eight Place Acquisitions. The proposal says "the Fair never goes dark" (the presentation).
  • What the board did with it: the agenda lists it as an "[Information Item]" (Oct 13 agenda, item 6-A-1): a presentation, not a vote. Any lease or development would need its own board action.

The housing dispute with the City of Del Mar

  • August 18, 2026: the board voted 5-3 to end its agreement with the City to study affordable housing at the fairgrounds. The City says $1.7 million in State Housing Acceleration Program grant funds had been allocated for feasibility studies for 61 affordable homes, and that it "remains committed to its obligation to plan for affordable housing" (City of Del Mar).
  • October 15, 2026: Mayor Tracy Martinez issued an open letter responding to statements made at the October 13 board meeting (City of Del Mar).
