Free state beach parking with your library card

Borrow a free day-use pass like a book and park free at Torrey Pines, Cardiff, San Elijo and the Carlsbad state beaches. Here's what it covers and where to get it.

Your library card can get you a free day-use parking pass for California state parks, including the state beaches from Torrey Pines to Carlsbad. You borrow it like a book, hang it on the mirror, and skip the day-use fee.

  • Torrey Pines State Beach
  • Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve
  • Cardiff State Beach
  • San Elijo State Beach
  • South Carlsbad State Beach

Not covered: Leucadia State Beach and Moonlight State Beach, both on State Parks' non-participating list.

What it covers

  • Free day-use entry for one passenger vehicle carrying up to nine people, or one motorcycle, at 200+ participating state park units.
  • Any day, holidays included, if there's space. It doesn't guarantee a spot.
  • Not covered: camping, per-person tour or museum fees, special events, extra vehicles, boat use, and off-highway vehicle parks. Not valid at national or city parks.

Where to borrow it

  • San Diego County Library (the Solana Beach, Del Mar, Cardiff and Encinitas branches): request a pass with your card. 10-day loan, no renewals, and no late fees, though a pass stops working if it isn't back within 10 days of its due date.
  • Carlsbad City Library: Carlsbad cardholders reserve online, by phone or in person; up to 10 days, with up to three automatic renewals if no one is waiting. They also lend adventure packs with the pass and hiking gear.
