Getting older doesn't have to mean getting stuck. Here is every way to get around in coastal North County, from still driving with a smarter car to a door-to-door van, so a family can pick the rung that fits today and see the next one. PJ, a local in Solana Beach, sets up the apps and the car; he doesn't drive anyone.
Rung 1: still driving, with the car helping
Cost: the car, plus PJ's setup by the hour
Newer cars brake, steer and watch blind spots on their own. Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) goes further, but the word that matters is Supervised: the driver still has to watch the road and be ready to take over, every second. It can make a drive less tiring; it doesn't replace the driver. PJ sets up the car: the phone key and a backup card, the app on the family's phone too, a home charger on the right SDG&E rate, and a first drive through the features. Family Assist, $30 an hour. Shopping help is free: in California, being paid to broker a car sale takes a dealer license with an autobroker endorsement (Vehicle Code 11735), and PJ takes nothing from any seller.
Rung 2: no driver at all (Waymo)
Cost: the fare shows in the app before you book
Waymo's driverless cars opened to the public in San Diego in September 2026, starting in certain neighborhoods (NBC 7). Waymo lists San Diego as "gradually adding riders," on the road 24 hours a day (Waymo Help), so download the app, join, and check the map reaches your parent's street before counting on it. Riders who are blind praised it at City Hall; the City Council voted 8-0 on September 14 to ask the State for more local say. PJ sets up the app on your parent's phone and yours, and practices a booking with them: the Waymo starter, $29 flat. Waymo in San Diego: how to ride, where it goes.
Rung 3: a ride the family books
Cost: the Uber or Lyft fare, plus $6 through JFS
You book from your phone; they just get in. JFS On the Go Navigator sends an Uber or Lyft with as little as 30 minutes' notice, weekdays 8am to 4pm, for the fare plus a $6 service fee: (858) 637-3210. Uber also lets you request a ride for someone else from your own phone.
Rung 4: bus and train
Cost: $1.50 senior bus fare (65+)
NCTD buses run the coast, and the Coaster stops at Solana Beach, Encinitas and Carlsbad. Next bus at any stop · Coaster times from Solana Beach · North County without a car.
Rung 5: free and volunteer senior rides

JFS On the Go (60+, up to 10 rides a month, book 5 days ahead), Del Mar Community Connections (free, 92014 area), the Encinitas and Carlsbad senior center shuttles and RideFACT ($5 to $20 by distance). Solana Beach's free 65+ pilot runs through October 31 (18 days left). Every option by town, with who qualifies.
Rung 6: door to door, for disability
Cost: $10 to $20, or covered
NCTD LIFT (based on disability, not age), RideFACT NOW wheelchair vans the same day ($10 to $20 one way), and Medi-Cal rides to medical appointments. Details on the rides page.
