Google's Gemini agent, for a small business

What Google launched on October 8, when small businesses get it, and a get-ready checklist for a North County shop.

On October 8, 2026, Google Cloud announced the Gemini agent, which it calls a single, universal agent for work: you ask in one prompt box, and it plans the job, uses tools, connects to your business systems and brings back something finished inside the documents and inbox you already use.

Can a small business use it yet? Google says Gemini is in early access with small and midsize business customers now and "will be available to all customers soon." Versions for financial services and legal are in preview; government, healthcare and retail are listed as coming soon.

What Google says it does

  • Works where you work: inside Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Chat and Calendar, plus Microsoft 365 and Slack, on the web, phones and desktops.
  • Keeps going without you: it runs in the cloud, so a long job continues after you close the laptop.
  • Picks the model per job: Google says it routes each task across its Gemini models and Claude models from Anthropic, using a smaller model when that does the job.
  • Spend limits: per-project spend caps that pause the agent at the limit, so the bill can't run away.
  • Company rules: admin and security controls applied to every agent in the company.

Google's announcement doesn't list small-business pricing; check with Google Cloud before you plan around a number.

Get your business ready (before it reaches you)

Google says three things make the agent useful: tools that connect it to your systems, skills that teach it how your work gets done, and context, the institutional knowledge that makes your company unique. For a small shop, that means:

  1. Tidy the systems it will touch. One Google Workspace (or Microsoft 365) account per person, a shared drive with clear folders, and a calendar people actually keep current.
  2. Write down three jobs you repeat every week as step lists: quoting a customer, following up an unpaid invoice, booking a job. Those become its skills.
  3. Put your business knowledge in one document: prices, service area, hours, policies, the answers to the ten questions customers always ask. That becomes its context.
  4. Decide what it may never do alone: send money, sign anything, email a customer without review. Set a monthly spend cap.

The human part

An agent does the work across your tools; a person still decides what matters, catches what looks wrong and handles the logins, calls and judgment calls. That's how SideGuy already runs: AI does the building and checking, PJ handles what needs a human.
