Equipment Medicare covers, near you

The doctor ordered a walker, a wheelchair or a hospital bed. Now where do you get it? Medicare Part B covers medically necessary equipment that a doctor or other provider orders for use at home, but only from suppliers enrolled in Medicare. After the Part B deductible you pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount, if the supplier accepts assignment (Medicare.gov). From CMS's Medicare supplier directory, rebuilt every morning. Call first: stock changes, and some suppliers only bill certain items.

• Ask if they accept assignment. Medicare.gov says a supplier that participates in Medicare must accept assignment, meaning it can charge you only the coinsurance and the Part B deductible on the Medicare-approved amount. A non-participating supplier doesn't have to.
• Bring the doctor's order (the prescription for the equipment).
• On a Medicare Advantage plan? Ask the plan which suppliers are in its network. Every 2027 plan in San Diego County.
• Just need it for a few weeks? Borrow it free first: the North County equipment exchange and loan closet.
