Cracked screen, a battery that won't last, a Mac that won't start? The fix itself has to come from Apple or a repair shop, and California requires shops that repair home electronics for pay to register with the State. Here's the order to check things in, what a shop owes you in writing, and the part a local can handle for you: getting it there and back.
Start with Apple's own options
- Check your coverage first: enter the serial number at Apple's coverage check; a warranty or AppleCare can change the price completely.
- In person: Apple says you can get support "at any Genius Bar or Apple Authorized Service Provider." Find the nearest on Apple's repair locations. Apple adds that Authorized Service Providers "can set their own service fees and will provide their own estimate."
- By mail: Apple "can send you a prepaid shipping box with everything you need to securely mail your iPhone in for repair, on your schedule and without an appointment" (Apple iPhone repair).
- Doing it yourself: Apple has Self Service Repair for some models.
Or a local shop: check it's registered
California's Electronic and Appliance Repair Dealer Registration Law covers anyone who, for pay, repairs electronics "normally used or sold for personal, family, household, or home office use," and says: "It shall be unlawful to act as a service dealer without first having registered."
To check a shop: search its name at the Department of Consumer Affairs license search and look for a Bureau of Household Goods and Services registration (an Electronic or Combination Service Dealer).
Bureau of Household Goods and Services, EAR laws and regulations (2024), sections 9801 and 9840.
What the shop owes you in writing
Section 9844: "An initial written estimate for the cost of repair shall be given to the customer before performing any repairs." It has to include all parts and labor, and the shop can't charge more than the estimate without your consent. A shop may charge a diagnosis fee, but it has to tell you the amount in writing when it accepts the device. Keep both papers.
