Late library books? No fines, but watch day 28

The County library's own rules, a due-date checker, the 24/7 book drops near the coast, and a local who'll do the run.

Library books piling up by the door? Good news first: the San Diego County Library hasn't charged a late fine since July 14, 2021. There's still a clock, though, and the day that matters is day 28. Built after a week of book runs with PJ's mom.

Where's your book on the clock?

The 28-day rule

  • 3 days before: The library tries to renew it for you, for 21 more days.
  • Due date: Still no fine. There hasn't been one since July 14, 2021.
  • 7 days late: First overdue notice.
  • 14 days late: Second notice.
  • 28 days late: Billed as lost (item cost plus a processing fee) and the card is suspended. Return it in good condition and the bill clears.
  • 49 days late: Second bill.
  • 80 days late: Balances of $100 or more may go to a collection agency, plus a $10 fee.

Owe more than $20 and you can't renew or check out until it's paid, though you can still use the library and its online services.
