Is it just my house?
- Look outside. SDG&E says if the street lights are on and your neighbor's house is lit, it's likely not an outage: it could be a tripped breaker.
- Check the breaker panel, usually near the SDG&E meter. Unplug TVs, computers and medical devices first. If you see burn marks or hear buzzing, stop and call a licensed electrician.
- Neighbors dark too? Report it: SDG&E's report page (24/7) or 1-800-411-7343. The map shows whether it's already known and the estimated restore time.
- A line on the ground: stay away, don't touch it, call 911, then SDG&E. If a line falls on your car, SDG&E says stay inside until crews say it's safe.
Why is the power out?
SDG&E lists the usual causes: storms and high winds most commonly, then traffic accidents, damaged lines and planned maintenance. In fire weather it may also shut power off on purpose in high fire-threat areas (a Public Safety Power Shutoff); the shutoff status is in the table above. Shutoffs and heat waves: what to do.

While it's out
- Traffic lights out: the DMV handbook says stop as if there are STOP signs in all directions, then go when it's safe.
- Food: keep the fridge and freezer shut. A closed fridge keeps food safe about 4 hours; a full freezer about 48 (24 if half full). When SDG&E pays for spoiled food.
- Unplug TVs, appliances and electronics, and leave one light switched on so you know when power is back (SDG&E).
- Flashlights, not candles. A generator goes outside, at least 20 feet from windows and doors (CDC).
- Hot and no AC? Staying cool without power and the nearest Cool Zone.
- Someone on oxygen, a CPAP or other powered medical equipment: backup power and Medical Baseline.

How do I report a power outage to SDG&E?
On SDG&E's report page (sdge.com/report-outage), 24/7, or by phone at 1-800-411-7343. Report a downed line to 911 first.

My older parent's power went out in the storm. What do we do first?
If they rely on medical equipment for life support and it's life-threatening, call 911, which is SDG&E's own instruction on its Medical Baseline page. Otherwise check SDG&E's outage map (outage.sdge.com) for the restore time or call 1-800-411-7343, keep everyone far from any downed line, and keep the fridge closed. SDG&E also asks Medical Baseline customers to arrange a backup power supply ahead of outages. Want a hand? Text PJ.
Power is out in Encinitas today. What should I do and who do I call?
Check SDG&E's outage map (outage.sdge.com) for your street, the cause and the restore time. Report it at sdge.com/report-outage or 1-800-411-7343, 24/7, and call 911 first for a downed line.
