Short answer: if SDG&E caused the outage, you can file a claim. If it was a Public Safety Power Shutoff or weather, SDG&E says the rules it operates under prevent paying for things like spoiled food. You can still file if you believe SDG&E was at fault, and your homeowner's or renter's insurance may cover the loss.
Is the food still good?
The guidance SDG&E uses to judge food claims (U.S. Department of Agriculture):
- Fridge: usually keeps food up to about 4 hours, depending on how warm the room is.
- Half-full freezer: about 1 day.
- Full freezer: about 2 days.
Keep the doors shut. If in doubt, throw it out, and photograph and list it first.
How to file
- Online is fastest: SDG&E claims. Or mail, fax (1-858-541-5737) or call 1-800-411-7343.
- Food: an itemized list with what each item cost, plus receipts.
- Damaged appliances or electronics: repair estimates or invoices, photos, make and model, proof of purchase.
- What happens next: a claims rep contacts you within 3 to 5 business days; SDG&E aims for a decision in 30 to 45 days.
If they say no
SDG&E tells you why. You can then file in small claims or a civil action, or take the loss to your own insurance, which may pay it subject to your policy and deductible.
Before the next outage
- SDG&E power today and alerts: shutoff warnings come 48 hours, 24 hours and 1 to 4 hours ahead when possible.
- Medical Baseline if someone at home runs on medical equipment.
- Ice delivery to save the freezer, and El Niño prep.
