Searching "mini-split installation near me"? Before anyone drills a hole in the wall, run this checklist. It comes from the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB), the agency that licenses installers.
The checklist
- Licensed, and you checked. Anyone who does work that needs a building permit, uses workers, or charges $1,000 or more for labor and materials must hold a current CSLB license. A number on the truck isn't proof: check the license or call 800-321-2752.
- Insured. Ask for the certificate showing workers' compensation and liability insurance; it also shows on the license page.
- Three written bids on the same scope. CSLB says to beware of any bid far below the others.
- A small down payment. CSLB: it should never exceed 10 percent of the contract price or $1,000, whichever is less. (The one exception is a contractor with a blanket performance and payment bond on file with CSLB.)
- Everything in writing: the work, the total price, when payments are due, and any changes.
- A certified tech for the refrigerant. The EPA says connecting a mini-split's lines takes a Section 608 certified technician; it isn't a do-it-yourself job.
- Permit and HOA. Ask your city's building department whether the install needs a permit, and check condo or HOA rules for the outdoor unit. Renting? It's the landlord's wall, so ask first.
Repair, or not cooling or heating right?
The same checklist applies, with one more rule: EPA regulations require technicians who maintain, service, repair or dispose of equipment that could release ozone-depleting refrigerants to be certified, so a refrigerant leak or recharge is a job for a certified tech, not a handyman. Ask for a written estimate first, and remember CSLB's license line: any job that needs a permit, uses workers, or totals $1,000 or more needs a licensed contractor.
The money in 2026
The 30% federal tax credits ended with 2025, and California's heat pump rebates for homes are fully reserved with a waitlist, so be wary of any bid that quotes them. What a mini-split costs to run, room by room, and how it compares with a space heater: mini-splits in plain words. On SDG&E's CARE or FERA? Up to 35% off the bill it runs on.
