A mini-split is a heat pump: one wall unit heats in winter and cools in summer, no ducts, room by room. The U.S. Department of Energy says modern air-source heat pumps use about 50% less electricity than furnaces and baseboard heaters, and a plug-in space heater makes heat the same way baseboards do. With SDG&E's winter prices starting November 1, that's the difference between about $0.80 and $0.40 for an hour of heat.
What is a mini-split, in plain words?
Think of a quiet air conditioner that hangs high on the wall and also heats. It comes with a remote. A small unit sits outside, and a technician connects the two through a small hole in the wall; no ducts, no furnace.
You don't need to heat or cool the whole house. One unit in the room you spend your day in (the living room or the bedroom) keeps you comfortable, and the rest of the house can stay as it is. That's where the savings are, and why it suits a parent living alone.
Living in three rooms? Living room, bedroom, kitchen is how a lot of people actually live. One outdoor unit can run wall units in more than one room (a multi-zone system), or start with the room you spend the day in and add one later.

SDG&E TOU-DR1 winter prices (November 1 to May 31) above 130% of baseline, effective August 1, 2026; the mini-split column uses the Department of Energy's 50% figure. Your unit's real number depends on its rating and the weather; San Diego's mild winters are easy on it.

Before you buy a $500 mini-split online
- Does it heat? Look for "heat pump" or a heating mode in the specs. Some units sold as "mini split air conditioners" cool only.
- Can your outlet run it? The manual lists the circuit it needs. If that means a new circuit, that's an electrician's job.
- Who connects it? The EPA says installing a mini-split, including connecting pre-charged refrigerant lines, requires a Section 608 certified technician. Budget for one even if the box says easy install.
- Permit and HOA: ask your city's building department whether your install needs a permit, and check condo or HOA rules for the outdoor unit.
- Efficiency: compare the SEER2 (cooling) and HSPF2 (heating) ratings, or look for ENERGY STAR.
The money that changed
The 30% federal tax credits are gone. The IRS says the heat pump credit covers improvements made through December 31, 2025, and the solar and battery credit isn't available for anything placed in service after that date. Plenty of ads still quote them. California's heat pump rebates are tapped out too: TECH Clean California says the HEEHRA rebates for single-family homes were fully reserved statewide on February 24, 2026, and for multifamily on September 1, 2026; new requests go on a waitlist. Check the current status before counting on one.
Go grid-light
The setup that leans on the grid least in San Diego: rooftop solar for the daytime, a battery for 4 to 9pm, a mini-split for heating and cooling, and the grid only overnight at the cheapest price. Renting? Start with plug-in balcony solar. On your bill now: winter rates · the cheaper Clean Energy Alliance plan · cost to run AC.

Questions people ask
How much does a mini-split cost to run in San Diego?
For heat, the Department of Energy says about half the electricity of resistance heat. On SDG&E's winter TOU-DR1 off-peak price (53.1 cents a kWh), the heat a 1.5 kW space heater makes in an hour costs about $0.80; a mini-split makes it for about $0.40.
Can I install a mini-split myself?
Not the refrigerant part. The EPA says installing a mini-split, including connecting or disconnecting pre-charged lines, requires a Section 608 certified technician.
Is there still a federal tax credit for heat pumps?
Not for new installs. The IRS says the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit covers improvements made through December 31, 2025.
Does a mini-split heat and cool?
A heat pump mini-split does both. Check the specs for heat pump or heating mode; some units sold as mini-split air conditioners only cool.
