Extreme Heat Warning on the San Diego County coast through Thursday 8pm. The National Weather Service says to check up on relatives and neighbors; the County lists older adults among those at high risk. The heat check. Text PJ for a check-in.

Official: National Weather Service · County of San Diego, Cool Zones. Checked Oct 6, 2026.

Extreme Heat Warning for the San Diego County coast until Thursday, Oct 8 at 8pm (National Weather Service). Today: 88°F at Fletcher Cove, sunny.

The Weather Service's own instructions: "Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes."

The County lists older adults and people with chronic medical conditions among the groups at high risk for heat illness, and its first tip is to check on friends and neighbors at high risk. Here's the check, in order.

The check-in

  1. Call, and listen. Confused, slurring, or "just tired"? Those are warning signs below, not a bad mood.
  2. Is the home cool? If there's no air conditioning, get them to a Cool Zone: free, air-conditioned places the County runs during heat. Near the coast: Solana Beach, Del Mar and Encinitas · Carlsbad · Oceanside · the County's full list and map.
  3. Water within reach, and lightweight, loose clothing; heavy activity only early morning or evening.
  4. Power plan. Medical equipment at home? SDG&E Medical Baseline adds extra warnings before shutoffs. Worried about the AC bill? what an hour of AC costs.
