Under federal rules, if you leave a Medicare Advantage plan's service area for more than 6 months in a row, the plan must disenroll you, unless it offers a visitor or traveler benefit, which can let you stay enrolled for up to 12 months. Plans can limit that benefit to certain areas.
What counts as away
- Living outside the plan's service area (usually your home county or counties).
- Plan mail returned as undeliverable with no forwarding address: the rules treat that as being temporarily absent, so keep mail forwarded.
- Plans enroll people based on where they permanently live; a temporary move doesn't change that.
While you're away
Every Advantage plan must cover emergency care, out-of-area urgent care and temporary dialysis anywhere in the U.S. Routine care away from home depends on the plan, so ask before you go.
If the rule doesn't fit your life
Original Medicare works with any provider that takes Medicare anywhere in the U.S. Switching during Open Enrollment (October 15 to December 7) is allowed, but it doesn't guarantee you can buy a Medigap policy: outside your Medigap windows, insurers can review your health. Moving for good opens a Special Enrollment Period. The full snowbird guide: does my Medicare work when I winter here? Free help: HICAP, 1-800-434-0222.
