Retire to the coast

Move a parent to North County San Diego

For retirees stuck in a cold winter, and the kids who worry about them: the official steps, the local pages, and a guy on the ground.

A lot of retirees in cold cities spend every winter mostly indoors and could live somewhere easier. What stops them usually isn't money: it's not knowing how to do the move, and having no one on the ground once they land. This page is the how, and PJ is the someone.

Less is best to start: a test drive

Don't sell the house. Start with a few weeks in a furnished short stay (an Airbnb works) and try the real routine: the towns, the grocery stores, the pharmacy, the doctors' offices, the Coaster, the beach at sunset, with PJ as your local for errands and paperwork. No car? Rides for seniors. You'll know fast whether it fits. Short stays by town: snowbird in North County.

If it does, rent next, for a winter or for good. PJ's own mom is the first client. PJ isn't a real estate agent; for a lease or a purchase he'll point you to a licensed one. Compare the towns: moving to North County, town by town.

The official steps

  1. Medicare. Moving out of a Medicare Advantage or drug plan's service area opens a Special Enrollment Period: it starts the month you move (or the month before, if you tell the plan first) and runs 2 full months after. Free, unbiased help picking a California plan: HICAP, on our Medicare page. Find new doctors who take Medicare on Care Compare.
  2. The movers. A company moving you across state lines must be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and have a USDOT number, and "registered" isn't the same as authorized to move household goods. Look it up on FMCSA's mover search or call 800-832-5660. Moving within California? Check the state mover license.
  3. The DMV. New residents need a California driver license within 10 days of becoming a resident, and an out-of-state car must be registered within 20 days. Flying back for the holidays? REAL ID or passport.
  4. Vote here. Register at the new address: deadlines and how.
  5. Power, water, trash. SDG&E and the cheaper local plan · who supplies your water · which bin.
  6. Getting around without driving. Seniors ride the Coaster for half fare: NCTD fares · Coaster times.
  7. Buying a home? File the free homeowners' exemption after you close.

A guy on the ground

The test drive: rides around North County during the short stay, so it's a real look at daily life, not a vacation. Before the move: utilities on, the mover checked, the Medicare timing worked out. Move week: PJ meets the movers, gets the essentials unpacked, fills the fridge. The first months: the DMV appointment, rides to new doctors, the Coaster, errands, and the senior benefits checklist. It's not a full-time job, it's a SideGuy job.
