Zelle and Venmo move money in minutes, and that's what scammers count on. What you can do depends on one thing: whether you OK'd the payment. Pick the app and what happened, and get the steps from Zelle's and Venmo's own help pages.

Scam or fraud? It changes everything

  • Fraud: someone used your account without you. Zelle says you're typically able to get that money back. Report it to your bank immediately.
  • Scam: you OK'd the payment because someone tricked you. Zelle says you may not get it back, because you technically authorized it. Still call your bank: qualifying imposter scams may be eligible for reimbursement.

From Zelle, Understanding Fraud & Scams and the Zelle Help Center.

Zelle, straight from Zelle

  • Payments can't be reversed once the person is enrolled; the money arrives within minutes.
  • Cancel only works if they haven't enrolled yet: your Zelle activity, the payment, "Cancel This Payment."
  • No purchase protection. Zelle recommends not using it to buy from people you don't know, like online sellers. Ask your bank whether it offers protection.
  • A call from "your bank"? Hang up and call the number on the back of your debit card.

Paying someone you don't know · Tips for safe payments

Venmo, straight from Venmo

  • Locked or frozen: check your email, including Spam and Junk, for Venmo's message; it says what happened and what to do. Venmo may restrict payments or ask for documents.
  • Frozen after a failed payment: repay it (partial payments work); money you receive goes to the balance you owe first.
  • Scammed or money missing: Me, Settings, Get Help, Chat With Us, and ask for an agent, as soon as possible.
  • Buying something? Only payments to a business profile or tagged as a purchase can be covered by Purchase Protection; the seller pays a small fee.
  • The code is the key: an agent will never ask for it, never asks to access your device, never asks you to install an app.

Questions people ask

Can I get my money back from a Zelle scam?

It depends whether you authorized the payment. Zelle says unauthorized payments (fraud) are typically refunded, but if you OK'd a payment because you were tricked, you may not get it back. Call your bank: qualifying imposter scams may be eligible for reimbursement.

Can I cancel a Zelle payment?

Only if the person hasn't enrolled with Zelle yet. Once they're enrolled, Zelle says payments can't be reversed.

Does Zelle have purchase protection?

No. Zelle says it does not offer purchase protection and recommends not using it to pay people you don't know.

Why is my Venmo account locked or frozen?

Venmo says accounts can be frozen or restricted when activity looks inconsistent with its User Agreement, and it may ask for documents. Check your email, including Spam, for Venmo's message about what to do.

Will Venmo ever ask for my verification code?

No. Venmo says an agent will never ask for the code it texts you, never asks to access your device and never asks you to install an app.
